The Day Before... Friday
Warrnambool
Melbourne and interstate passengers transfer to Warrnambool for an overnight stay.
DAY 1 Saturday (D)
Warrnambool to Broken Hill
Today we depart Warrnambool on our great outback adventure. Travelling through Central Victoria and the mallee country to Mildura, then travel to Wentworth, a grazing and irrigation town on the junction of the Darling and Murray Rivers. We follow the Silver City Highway to Broken Hill, a large mining and regional centre in south west corner of New South Wales. Overnight - Broken Hill
Day 2 Sunday (B.L.D.)
Broken Hill
"Silver City" stands on a vast silver - lead - zinc deposit 8 km long x 150 m wide, and yield 53 other minerals as well as the main one. Today we take a town tour with a local guide and visit some of the local attractions. After lunch we will visit Silverton, now a Ghost Town, which was once a booming mining town and contains many classified buildings. Overnight - Broken Hill.
Day 3 Monday (B.L.D.)
Broken Hill to Tibooburra
An early start as we head north along the Silver City highway through Packsaddle to Milparinka, a former mining town with an interesting bush pub and historic buildings, continuing to Tibooburra, a grazing town surrounded by granite boulders. Overnight Tibooburra.
Day 4 Tuesday (B.L.D.)
Tibooburra to Innamincka
Today we head west into the Simpson Stony Desert National Park travelling through sand dune country and on to the Strzelecki Track, arriving at Innamincka, in time to explore the banks of Coopers Creek, the town and the restored Australian Inland Mission Hospital. Overnight - Innamincka
Day 5 Wednesday (B.L.)
Innamincka
Today we visit Burkes Memorial Grave and travel through the Stoney Desert to Nappamerrie Station to visit the famous "Dig Tree" where the journey of Burke and Wills tragically ended. Evening BBQ at Innamincka Hotel (own expense) Overnight - Innamincka
Day 6 Thursday (B.L.D.)
Innamincka - Birdsville
We head north through cattle country to Cordillo Downs to view the remains of what was once the largest shearing shed in Australia. Continuing through the desert, crossing the border into Queensland, and onto Birdsville to enjoy the Race Carnival. Overnight - Birdsville.
Day 7 Friday (B.D.)
Birdsville
A full day to explore Birdsville, enjoy a beer at the legendary Birdsville Pub, or try your luck at the races. In the evening you will be able to join in the festivities provided at Birdsville. Overnight - Birdsville
Day 8 Saturday (B.D.)
Birdsville
Today is the BIG day, the running the famous Birdsville Cup. A change to pick a few winners, and marvel at the spectacle of an outback race meeting, drawing people and horses from distant stations and cities throughout Australia. After the races, richer or poorer, your last chance to enjoy the local festivities. Overnight - Birdsville.
Day 9 Sunday (B.D)
Birdsville to Mungeranie
W This morning we journey south along the Birdsville track. It was developed as a stock route for drovers bringing cattle from the stock grazing country of southwest QLD to the railhead at Maree. Artesian Bores line the route, pouring out millions of litres of boiling water each day. Arriving in Mungeranie for our overnight stop. Overnight - Mungeranie
Day 10 Monday (B.L.D)
Mungerani to William Creek
Today we continue south to Maree which is the service centre for the surrounding patrol area and the commencement of the famous Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks. Up until 1980 ,it was the major break-of-gauge station on the "Ghan" rail journey to Alice Springs. Maree was Australia's major centre for the camel trains which were the main means of transporting supplies and heavy loads in the outback. We take the Oodnadatta Track to William Creek. Stopping to view Lake Eyre South which is the lowest point below sea level in Australia. Overnight - William Creek
Day 11 Tuesday (B.L.D.)
William Creek to Coober Pedy
After breakfast we depart William Creek and travel through Anne Creek Station, the world's largest cattle property, on our way to Coober Pedy which is the main opal mining area in Australia. Overnight - Coober Pedy
Day 12 Wednesday (B.L.D.)
Coober Pedy to Woomera
Today we explore this famous opal town. We take a guided tour, view an opal cutting and polishing demonstration, see an underground house, an underground church, an opal mine and have the opportunity to purchase some locally mined gems. Because of the heat most people live underground. Mid afternoon we head south to Woomera. Overnight - Woomera
Day 13 Thursday (B.L.D.)
Woomera
Today we take a guided tour of the Woomera Rocket Range see the launch pads and control buildings of this former closed defence area. Visit the Missile Park featuring many of the rockets and aircrafts used at the Woomera Rocket Range. Also we travel to Roxby Downs, an oasis in the Desert, built for miners at the Olympic Dam Mine Overnight - Woomera
Day 14 Friday (B.L.D.)
Woomera to Adelaide
Today we travel south to Port Augusta where we will take a guided tour of the new Augusta Power Stations. Then on to the Wadlata Outback Centre. After lunch we continue south on the Stuart Highway to Adelaide. Overnight - Adelaide
Day 15 Saturday (B.)
Adelaide
Today we begin the day with a guided tour of Adelaide. BYO lunch and time to do some shopping along Rundle Mall. This evening we will visit Adelaide Casino where we will be given a guided tour and then we will be able to try our luck on the machines. Overnight - Adelaide.
Day 16 Sunday (B.L.)
Adelaide to Warrnambool
After breakfast we depart Adelaide on our way to Warrnambool.
